This project converted an existing covered rear porch into a fully screened enclosure without altering the primary structure.

White extruded aluminum framing was installed in each opening, with an aluminum chair rail and vertical posts dividing the screen panels. The screens themselves are white extruded aluminum flanged frames with black spline and charcoal fiberglass fabric. This combination reads cleanly against the white framing and gray siding of the house. The charcoal fabric provides good outward visibility while reducing glare into the space.

Entry is through a primed cedar 36x80-inch wood out-swing French screened door, hinged on the left active side. The door's wood construction and French panel configuration are a step up from a standard aluminum screened door and coordinate well with the white column and trim detailing already present on the porch. The beadboard ceiling and ceiling fan visible in the interior photos were existing — this project screened in the perimeter without touching the ceiling or floor.

From the exterior, the white aluminum framing and columned surround give the screened porch a finished, intentional appearance that sits well against the home's gray siding and white trim.

Why This Project Works

  • Working within the existing column and roof structure kept the project scope focused — no new framing, roofing, or structural work was required
  • White extruded aluminum framing holds up better long-term than wood screen framing and requires no painting or maintenance
  • Charcoal fiberglass screen fabric with black spline provides good outward visibility without the reflective appearance of standard gray screen
  • The cedar French screened door adds a level of detail that a standard single screened door wouldn't provide, and matches the existing architectural trim on the porch
  • Touch-up painting on the existing columns kept the finished product looking cohesive without a full repaint
