This project combined a new 12x16-foot gable-style screened room with an irregular-shaped composite deck and an adjacent exterior landing on a home with dark board-and-batten siding. The screened room sits on a 16x12-foot section of the deck frame engineered to carry the structure's weight, with the finished floor set flush to the existing house door threshold. The exterior landing is framed one step down from the screened room floor and connects to a 4-foot-wide stair.

The gable roof form gives the structure more presence from the yard than a shed-style roof would on a footprint this size — the ridge runs perpendicular to the house, and the 1-foot overhangs and 5-inch gutters with downspouts handle water management at the roofline. The screened openings use flanged screens across all exposed wall surfaces, with white aluminum framing visible from the exterior. A pressure-treated vertical apron wraps the base of both the screened room and the exterior landing.

Both the screened room floor and the exterior landing are finished in TimberTech Terrain+ Series cap stock composite decking, installed parallel to the house wall. Insect screen fabric is laid over the joists beneath the screened room decking for a secondary layer of pest control. A picture frame border runs the open edges of the exterior landing. Stair treads, risers, and fascia are matching TimberTech composite.

Why This Project Works

  • The gable roof form adds height and visual weight appropriate to the 12x16 footprint, which a shed-style roof would not
  • Flush floor-to-threshold framing creates a level transition from the home's interior into the screened room
  • Insect screen fabric beneath the composite decking provides pest control at the floor level, not just at the walls
  • TimberTech Terrain+ Series on both the screened room floor and exterior landing keeps the material consistent across the full deck area
  • Flanged screen panels on the wall openings provide a clean, low-profile screen detail without requiring separate framing members at each panel edge
  • Pressure-treated vertical apron at the base is a practical, cost-effective perimeter finish that can be stained to match or complement the composite above
