This project involved the construction of a new rear deck on a two-story home, totaling approximately 418 square feet on the main platform with an additional 8x3-foot framing extension dedicated to a grilling zone. The deck is built on a pressure-treated frame with cement pier footings, 4x6 posts, and joists at 16 inches on center.
The decking surface is TimberTech Terrain+ Series cap stock composite in Dark Oak, installed diagonally with a single picture frame border and double parting board. The diagonal pattern is visible from the yard and gives the deck a more distinctive appearance compared to a standard parallel or perpendicular installation. Camo and Cortex fasteners keep the surface hardware-free. Matching Dark Oak fascia wraps all open edges, and RMC StyleCrest vinyl apron in Canyon Brown runs the full perimeter of the deck base, coordinating with the home's neutral exterior.
A 6-foot-wide stair with TimberTech Dark Oak treads, risers, and fascia provides access to grade, with Westbury Tuscany 36" powder-coated aluminum railing in Fine Textured Black running down both sides. The same Westbury Tuscany railing runs the full perimeter of the flat deck area. A 3-foot projection box step was installed at the bay door, set approximately 3 to 4 inches below the threshold, and the existing rear door threshold was replaced with an Azek white PVC toe kick for a clean transition between the interior and the deck surface.
Why This Project Works
- The diagonal decking pattern with a border and double parting board adds visual interest to a large, flat deck surface without requiring additional structure
- The dedicated 8x3 grilling zone extends the usable footprint in a practical, purpose-built way
- The 6-foot-wide stair provides comfortable, code-compliant access to grade for a deck of this size
- Westbury Tuscany Fine Textured Black railing contrasts cleanly against the Dark Oak decking and Canyon Brown apron
- RMC StyleCrest vinyl apron gives the deck a finished appearance from the yard and conceals the framing below
- The Azek PVC toe kick at the rear door creates a clean, low-maintenance transition at the entry point
- TimberTech Terrain+ cap stock composite throughout means no painting, staining, or sealing required
