This backyard project combines two distinct outdoor surfaces, an elevated composite deck and a ground-level patio, connected by a stair and unified by a bold black privacy screen wall that runs along the property edge. The result is a backyard that functions as two separate zones while reading as one cohesive space.

The deck is 14x14 feet with an additional 4x4-foot extension, framed in pressure-treated lumber with cement pier footings, 4x6 posts, and joists at 16 inches on center. The surface is TimberTech Terrain+ Series cap stock composite in Natural White Oak throughout — decking, treads, risers, fascia, and vertical apron all in the same color, giving the deck a clean, monochromatic look. Westbury Tuscany 36" Fine Textured Black powder-coated aluminum railing runs the flat perimeter and down one side of the stairs, providing the only color contrast against the otherwise all-tan deck finish.

At grade, the 14x14-foot patio is laid in a checkerboard pattern using 2x2-foot cement pavers in alternating light and dark tones, set in pea gravel with plastic edging. The pattern is bold and intentional, visible immediately from the yard and from the deck above.

The privacy screen wall is the most distinctive element of this project. Four Hideaway screen panels on five posts, set in concrete, run along the patio edge in a dark finish that anchors the space visually and provides separation from the neighboring property. The screen wall also serves a functional purpose: a Storm Shell weatherproof TV enclosure is mounted directly into the panel system, housing a large flat-screen television that faces the patio. The enclosure protects the TV from the elements while keeping it fully accessible for outdoor viewing.

Why This Project Works

  • The checkerboard patio pattern at grade creates a strong visual feature that complements the more traditional deck surface above without competing with it
  • The Hideaway privacy screen wall does double duty — providing neighbor separation and serving as a mounting surface for the weatherproof TV enclosure
  • Using Natural White Oak across all deck surfaces — decking, treads, risers, fascia, and apron — keeps the deck finish simple and cohesive
  • The Fine Textured Black Westbury Tuscany railing ties the deck visually to the dark screen wall below, connecting the two levels
  • The Storm Shell TV enclosure makes the patio a functional outdoor entertainment space regardless of weather
  • The pea gravel and plastic edging around the paver pattern provides low-maintenance drainage at grade level
  • The two-zone layout — elevated deck for dining, ground patio for entertainment — gives the backyard clear functional separation
