Deck in Galena (September, 2024)

This deck was designed to create a spacious, highly functional outdoor living area that transitions seamlessly from the home into the backyard. With 360 square feet of usable space, the layout comfortably accommodates both dining and lounge zones while maintaining clear circulation paths and open sightlines.

The foundation of this project begins with a fully engineered pressure-treated deck frame supported by cement pier footings and 4x6 posts. Reinforced beams, ledger and band boards, and joists spaced at 16 inches on center provide a solid structural base. Blocking, bridging, stair stringers, and apron bracing were carefully integrated to ensure strength and longevity.

The deck surface features TimberTech Terrain+ Series cap stock composite decking in Weathered Oak, installed perpendicular to the home to create clean visual lines and a balanced layout. A picture-frame border in matching Weathered Oak adds a refined finishing detail around the perimeter, elevating the overall aesthetic. Concealoc and Cortex hidden fastening systems were used to maintain a smooth, uninterrupted surface free of visible hardware.

The stairs are finished with TimberTech treads in Weathered Oak paired with Espresso risers and fascia, creating subtle contrast and depth. TimberTech apron skirting in Espresso wraps the base of the deck, delivering a polished, enclosed look that enhances curb appeal from ground level.

Safety and style come together with Westbury Tuscany 36" tall powder-coated aluminum railing in Fine Textured Black. Installed along all flat deck areas and down both sides of the stairs, the railing provides secure boundaries while maintaining open views. Gates were added at the top of both staircases, offering an extra layer of safety and making this space ideal for families, pets, or controlled access during gatherings.

Integrated lighting brings the entire space to life after sunset. A transformer with dimmer controls powers combo post cap lights and stair riser lights, casting a warm, welcoming glow across the deck surface and stairs. The layered lighting design enhances ambiance while improving visibility and safety in the evening hours.

The finished result is a durable, low-maintenance composite deck that blends thoughtful design, modern materials, and functional lighting, creating a versatile outdoor space built for both everyday relaxation and evening entertaining.
