A Custom Deck with Dedicated Grill Zone

See the Project

This project involved the construction of a new rear deck on a two-story home, with a total framed area of approximately 337 square feet including a 3x11-foot bump-out designated as a dedicated grilling station. The frame is pressure-treated with cement pier footings, 4x6 posts, and joists at 16 inches on center.
The decking surface is TimberTech Prime+ Series cap stock composite in Dark Cocoa, installed perpendicular to the house wall with Concealoc and Camo hidden fasteners. A picture frame border in Dark Cocoa runs all open edges of the deck. Stair treads and fascia are Dark Cocoa, with PVC white risers and fascia providing a two-tone contrast that's carried through to the deck band boards as well. RMC StyleCrest vinyl apron in Java wraps the full perimeter of the deck base, sitting between a white PVC band board above and the grade below — a three-layer exterior detail that gives the deck a clean, layered appearance from the yard.
Westbury Tuscany 36" powder-coated aluminum railing in Fine Textured Black runs the full perimeter of the flat deck and down both sides of the 4-foot-wide stair. A single Westbury C-10 gate is included, providing a closeable entry point on the deck. The black railing against the white fascia and neutral Java apron gives the exterior elevation a high-contrast, finished look that works well against the home's white siding.
Why This Project Works
- The dedicated 3x11 grilling station bump-out keeps the main deck area clear while providing a purposeful, defined space for outdoor cooking
- The two-tone finish — Dark Cocoa decking and treads against PVC white risers and fascia — adds contrast and detail to an otherwise straightforward build
- The three-layer apron detail (white band board, Java vinyl apron, grade) gives the deck a more finished appearance from the yard than a single-material wrap
- Westbury Tuscany Fine Textured Black railing contrasts cleanly with the white fascia and neutral apron color
- The included gate adds a practical access point without interrupting the railing line
- TimberTech Prime+ Series cap stock composite requires no painting or staining and holds up well in a suburban backyard setting
- Picture frame border on all open edges gives the deck surface a complete, finished look
