Columbus Double Deck (August 2025)

This project involved a full surface rebuild of an existing second-story rear deck on a wooded, multi-level home, along with a 5-foot deck extension added to connect a new ProVia Legacy hinged patio door from the home's office. The existing framing was retained but upgraded to 12-inch on-center joist spacing on both the main deck and the second-story balcony. Butyl joist tape was applied to all joist and band board top surfaces prior to decking installation to protect the framing from moisture over time.

The new 5-foot extension was framed with cement pier footings, 6x6 posts, and 2x10 beams and joists, tied into the existing structure and flashed at the house wall. Both deck levels were finished with Azek/TimberTech Vintage Series PVC decking in Coastline, installed parallel to the house wall using a hidden fastener system and Cortex plug fasteners. Matching Vintage Series fascia in Coastline was installed on all open edges of both levels.

Westbury Tuscany C-10 railing in Speckled Walnut with 2x2 rail posts was installed on both the main deck and the second-story balcony, keeping the finish consistent across the full rear elevation of the home. Westbury Magna Star low-voltage LED post cap lights were added to each railing post on both levels, wired to a TimberTech low-voltage transformer.

Why This Project Works

• Upgrading to 12-inch on-center joist spacing on both levels improves the rigidity and long-term durability of the deck surface
• Butyl joist tape on all framing top surfaces protects against moisture damage, particularly important on a shaded, heavily wooded site
• Matching Azek Vintage Series Coastline decking, fascia, and railing across both levels creates a consistent look across the full rear of the home
